Nine Men's Morris is a strategy board game for two players, dating back to at least the Roman Empire.
How to Play Nine Men's Morris
Objective
The goal of Nine Men's Morris is to form "mills" (three pieces in a row) to remove opponent's pieces from the board. A player wins when the opponent is reduced to two pieces (unable to form mills) or is unable to make a legal move.
Setup
- The game is played on a board with 24 points (intersections).
- Each player has nine pieces (different color for each player).
- The board consists of three nested squares connected by lines.
- Players take turns placing their pieces on unoccupied points.
Playing The Game
The game has three phases:
- Placing Pieces (Phase 1)
- Players take turns placing one piece at a time on any empty point.
- If a player forms a mill (three in a row along a line), they remove an opponent's piece (not part of a mill unless no other pieces are available).
- Moving Pieces (Phase 2)
- Once all pieces are placed, players take turns moving pieces to adjacent connected points.
- Forming a new mill allows removing another opponent’s piece.
- Flying Phase (Phase 3, Only When a Player Has 3 Pieces Left)
- If a player is reduced to three pieces, they can "fly," moving to any empty point instead of only adjacent ones.
Winning The Game
- A player wins if the opponent:
- Has only two pieces left (unable to form mills).
- Cannot make a legal move (all pieces are blocked).
